Wetlands. A short word for a long list of areas all over the world, which are entirely diverse but which have a lot in common. In Wetlands, water and terra firma are always totally intertwined. Their ecological systems are highly vulnerable and their existence is under constant threat. However, thanks to the "Ramsar Convention" the importance of wetlands is now internationally defined, acknowledged and validated. A good thing, that "Ramsar Convention", and pretty vital too. After all, together we misused and mistreated our Wetlands. Till very recently, for most of us, nature had one purpose only - serving mankind. But things have changed. And not just because we've suddenly discovered a secret love for the birds and the bees, the flower and the trees. We have merely started to realise that by ravaging our Wetlands, we were turning Nature against us. We were in fact tampering with the very essence of our existence. |
